String tension refers to how tightly the strings of a badminton racket are strung.

The more tension you have in your strings, the greater the power generated. On the other hand, the more stretched and dull your strings, the less power generated. Unfortunately, like most things, adjusting your strings based on tension isn’t that simple. In fact, many variables are in play when determining how loose or tense to adjust your strings; are you a beginner or expert? Do you have the ability to consistently hit the sweet spot of the string bed? Does your game involve more power or more deception and finesse?

As a general rule of thumb, if you’re a beginner, you’re going to want to play with a lower tension. If you’re an experienced veteran, however, higher tension is more suitable. Below is a general summary of what tension level (in pounds) are most suitable for each skill level:

Beginner: 17lbs-20lbs

Intermediate: 20lbs-24lbs

Advanced: 24lbs-27lbs

Professional/International: 27lbs – 30lbs+

With that said, string tension isn’t a one-size-fits all approach. Instead, you need to consider your playing style, your preferences, and of course, your current skill level. Moreover, if your racket strings haven’t been changed in a long time, then they’re probably very loose and in need of an adjustment.
